The Wick festival returns for the summer
This outdoor market combines a farmers’ market, local art sales, vintage fashion and new designers with DJs, gigs, a 'beach' and hot tubs
WITH over 15 markets in Hackney, it can be hard to distinguish yourself from the hordes. But the latest addition to the borough, The Wick, promises to be less market, more ‘mini festival’.
Returning to the Cre8 Lifestyle Centre, in the former public baths on Eastway, Hackney Wick, every Sunday over the summer, this outdoor event combines a farmers’ market, local art sales, vintage fashion and new designers with DJs, gigs, a 'beach' and even – for the more adventurous shopper – hot-tubs.
The market has been dreamt up by clubland IT girls Liz Mendez and Sonia Anderson, famous for throwing parties at festivals including Glastonbury and Burning Man, as well as the Caribbean Christmas space at last year’s Winterville in Victoria Park.
The organisers promise that a similar dedication to detail will be paid to the market – the boutique and food traders will be on rotation each week, with a view to including the latest of what East London has to offer.
The food court will have offerings from Yum Jungle, Mission Mariscos, Pulp’d fresh pressed juices, the Black Cab Coffee Company, Oh My Dog gourmet hot dogs and stone baked Italian pizzas.
A sneak peak of the events programme reveals a 'holistic day' with Indian head massages, tarot and crystals; 'kids' days' with arts, crafts and music activities; and a Bank Holiday beach party. Just don’t forget to pack your bikini in your shopping trolley.
The Wick runs every Sunday, 3 May to 25 October, from 12noon 11pm, at the Old Baths, Hackney Wick. Children are welcome until 6pm. 80 Eastway, Hackney Wick, E9 5JH.
