Nike opens in Hackney Walk
The eagerly awaited Nike factory retail store in Hackney's new fashion district is now open
NIKE’s much-anticipated Hackney store launched with a queue of residents excited to see the building which has been under wraps for months.
With whoops, claps, shouts and hollas, Nike’s energetic team of staff welcomed their first customers last month. The shop spans three levels and is located on Morning Lane, the home of the ‘Hackney Walk’ fashion district.
More new names are expected to join Nike at the Hackney Walk development next month, and will be housed in the renovated Victorian railway arches, which have been turned into a designer outlet shopping centre by celebrated architect David Adjaye.
They include Gieves & Hawkes, UGG, Colombo and Present. The outlets are expected to display discounts of up to 70 per cent on central London stores.
Luxury fashion names already established in the area include Burberry, Aquascutum, Bally, Anya Hindmarch and Pringle of Scotland.
Jack Basrawy, executive chairman and founder of Hackney Walk, said that plans for the next phase of the development meant that it would grow to be 'at least the size of Bicester Village.'
Many of the employees at Hackney Walk have found work through Hackney council's Ways into Work scheme – which supports, coaches and matches unemployed residents with employers in the borough. Fourteen of Nike’s latest employees were given jobs at the new fashion district in this way.
