Grab those Christmas must-haves and enjoy the festive entertainment at a host of local markets

HACKNEY'S spoilt for choice when it comes to markets and independent stores, so why not take advantage of the borough's unique shopping opportunities when searching for the perfect Christmas gift ... or a desperate last minute one.

There is a host of Christmas markets, late night shopping events, street festivals, and carol singing on offer, plus numerous appearances by a very busy Santa, sure to delight youngsters.

So if the idea of braving the Oxford Street crush this December gives you the fear, shun the West (End) and stay East instead. Here's our run down of some of this year's Make Hackney Sparkle highlights to give you a head start: 


Sutton House Christmas Market

Until 18 Dec, (weekends only) 12noon-5pm

A spectacular Christmas Market inside Hackney’s oldest country house with a surreal Santa’s sleigh and playful pantomime rooms at Sutton House, Homerton.

Organic Christmas at Growing Communities’ Farmers’ Market

10, 17 & 24 Dec, 10am-2.30pm

Get festive food and ethical gifts from this 100 per cent organic market at St Paul’s Church, Stoke Newington. Find fresh veg, meat and dairy products direct from the farm, plus an array of local, handmade food and gifts by Hackney-based producers.

Christmas on Broadway Market 

10, 17 & 24 Dec, 9am-4pm

Saturday market offering high quality fresh produce, with a Christmas Eve market for last minute shoppers. The street is also packed with great places to eat and drink, with many shops and restaurants offering discounts at Broadway Market.

Stoke Newington Town Hall Christmas Market

10 and 11 Dec, 11am-5pm

Come along to this free, annual Christmas market inside the Stoke Newington Town Hall. Browse over 60 stalls offering handmade and craft goodies and gifts. Santa Claus is also set to make an appearance and there’s the opportunity to ‘give a gift’ which will be donated to the children’s ward in Homerton hospital.

Christmas on Ridley Road Market 

10 Dec, 12noon-4pm

Get all of your last minute Christmas essentials as steel bands belt out traditional Christmas songs. Santa will also make an appearance at Ridley Road market, Dalston.

Santa Claus is coming to Hackney's Markets

He may be a busy man, but Father Christmas (pictured above) always makes time to shop at Hackney’s markets. Whether it’s picking up carrots for Rudolf at Ridley Road or buying some slippers for Mrs Claus in Hoxton, there is a lot on offer at all of Hackney’s markets this Christmas. Lucky shoppers may even spot the man himself, as he will be handing out small gifts and spreading good cheer throughout December. Don’t forget to take the ultimate Santa selfie and say hi to the big man.

Chatsworth Road Christmas Markets

11 & 18 Dec, 11am-4/8pm

Beautiful handmade gifts and crafts can be found in abundance at this popular local market and surrounding shops. Pick up food supplies from a range of specialist traders and enjoy tasty festive treats. Join in the fun at a grand finale on 18 December. There will be a relaxed, fun festival feel with something for the whole family. Visitors can expect music, a jolly Santa, mulled wine and lots more at Chatsworth Road market.

Hoxton Street Market Christmas knees-up

17 Dec, 10am-4pm

Alongside traditional and festive stalls, the market will be decorated with Christmas lights. There will also be a visit from Santa.

Chats Palace Christmas Market

17 Dec, 3-9pm

Chats Palace is holding its annual Christmas Makers’ Market, celebrating the resurgence of traditional crafts practices in Hackney. The Library Bar will have live music and be serving hot drinks and festive treats to keep shoppers’ spirits and energy levels high. £1 donation on the door.

Hackney Flea-Mas Market

17-18 Dec, 11am-6pm

Festive vintage market specialising in one-of-a-kind and handmade items. Plus carols and a cafe selling mulled wine and cakes. Abney Hall, 73a Stoke Newington Church Street, N16 0AS.
