Hackney One Carnival returns this Sunday

Cheer the carnival parade through the streets of Hackney and join in the after party in Dalston

GET set for the return of Hackney One Carnival this Sunday (11 September) with spectacular costumes, energetic dancers, sound systems and live music from around the world.

The Council-run event is set to fill the borough with colour and flavours as hundreds of performers from carnival and community groups join residents in celebration of Hackney’s diverse cultures and thriving creativity.

The carnival procession leaves Ridley Road at 2pm, and makes its way south along Dalston Lane, Richmond Road and Mare Street towards Hackney Town Hall, before heading up Amhurst Road and finishing back at Ridley Road at 5pm.

Some of the borough’s best musicians will also be playing at Gillett Square from 12noon to 3pm, followed by a mix of young performers and local DJs from 3pm to 7pm. Children and families can enjoy a free all-day play area in the square from 12noon.

A family-friendly affair is also set to take place at the Hackney Town Hall square, with street theatre from 1.45pm to 3.15pm, and a children’s play bus from 12noon to 4pm.

The finale party at Ridley Road will take place from 5pm to 8pm, with sound systems playing a mix of reggae, soca and Brazilian beats, as well as a host of food stalls with delicious treats from around the world.

Meanwhile, residents and businesses on Ridley Road are being encouraged to dress the front of their homes and shops in the most vibrant decorations they can find for the Hackney One Carnival Décor Challenge.

Judging will take place from 12noon on 10 September (the day before the carnival). All properties on Ridley Road will be automatically entered in the competition and residents can also e-mail a photo of their carnival-themed decorations to:
